Almeda's Journey to Carbon Neutrality Supporting Climate Action

Investing in a Greener Future

Increased greenhouse gas emissions measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO₂e), greenhouse gas emissions are the biggest driver of global warming. In the UK, businesses are responsible for around 85% of total emissions, making corporate action the top priority in tackling climate change.

By offsetting our carbon footprint and funding projects that remove CO₂e from the atmosphere, we can balance out our emissions and work toward becoming carbon neutral.

Following detailed emissions calculations, Almeda has made a conscious decision to invest in the Carbon Neutral Britain Woodland Fund, supporting reforestation and woodland management projects with a strong focus on enhancing local wildlife, ecology and biodiversity.

These projects include forest planting in Uruguay, reforestation after wildfires in Australia, and new woodland planting across the UK. With woodland creation initiatives in England, Scotland and Wales, our impact is felt both at home and abroad.

Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), all projects deliver valuable secondary benefits, including employment, education and broader community and environmental improvements.

Restoring Native Woodlands

Tree planting is the area for which the Yorkshire Dales Woodland Millennium Trust is best known. As part of the Yorkshire Woodland Management Project, more than 1.5 million broadleaf trees have been planted, creating native woodlands throughout the Yorkshire Dales and Nidderdale.

The species selected are well suited to the predominantly wetland landscape, with streams running through many of the planting sites. Over time, these native trees will help establish habitats ideal for wildlife such as the black grouse. Species planted include Downy Birch, Silver Birch, Rowan, Hazel, Bird Cherry, Sessile Oak, Goat Willow and Hawthorn. All saplings are protected with individual tree guards to shield them from harsh weather conditions and rabbit damage.

The Richmondshire Woodland Planting initiative is also part of the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust project, with 4,000 trees planted to create new broadleaf woodland. This site is additionally involved in YDMT’s Plastic Free Woodlands Project, supported by the European Outdoor Conservation Association, which aims to establish woodlands free from plastic.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

Almeda recognises the critical role businesses must play over the next five years, a period that scientists warn is vital before climate changes become irreversible. By becoming carbon neutral and supporting carbon offsetting projects, we are taking meaningful action now, at the point when collective efforts are essential to protect the future of our planet.

With our carbon footprint measured, we can set clear emission reduction targets and focus on lowering our impact based on our highest-emitting sources. By measuring accurately, offsetting responsibly, and committing to annual reductions, our business can achieve carbon neutrality while aligning with science-based targets and UK Government requirements.

At Almeda, environmental responsibility is not just about meeting legal standards; it is an integral part of our ethos. As leaders in facilities management, we understand that sustainability is a key pillar of our business strategy and guides us toward a greener, more sustainable future.
