Advancing Sustainability: Almeda's Journey to Carbon Neutrality supporting Climate Action

Increased Greenhouse Gas emissions

measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2) are the biggest cause of global warming on our planet. In the UK businesses account for 85% of the total emission, making corporate action the number 1 priority to helping stop climate change. By offsetting our carbon footprint, funding projects to remove CO2e from the atmosphere we can balance out our emissions to become carbon neutral.

Following emissions calculations Almeda has made a conscious decision to invest in the Carbon Neutral Britain Woodland Fund supporting Reforestation and Woodlands Management Projects with a strong focus on having a positive impact on the local wildlife, ecology and biodiversity. Investing in projects such as forest planting in Uruguay, reforestation after wildfires in Australia and woodland planting in the UK. With woodland creation projects in England, Scotland and Wales, the impact is felt at home as well as abroad. Aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) all projects have secondary benefits providing employment, education and other projects impacts and benefits.

Tree planting

is what the Yorkshire Dales Woodland Millennium Trust is most known for (and as part of The Yorkshire Woodland Management Project) over 1.5 million broadleaf trees have been planted, creating native woodlands throughout the Yorkshire Dales and Nidderdale. Trees plants are appropriate for the area, which is mainly wetland, with streams running through the planting area, the native tress will grow to provide a habitat suitable for black grouse. Trees planted include Downy Birch, Silver Birch, Rowan, Hazel, Bird Cherry, Sessile Oak, Goat Willow and Hawthorn. All samplings have been planted with individual tree guard to protect them from the harsh weather and rabbit damage.

Richmondshire Woodland Planting is also part of the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust project with 4,000 trees planted creating broadleaf woodland. The Woodland is also part of the YDMT’s Plastic Free Woodlands Project, supported by the European Outdoor Conservation Association, which aims to create woodland free of plastic.

Almeda is aware of the importance of businesses making a difference in the next 5 years before changes to the climate are irreversible. By becoming carbon neutral and by carbon offsetting we are actively doing our part of the plant now, when it is important.

With our carbon footprint accurately measured, we can look at emission reduction targets, and reducing our carbon footprint for the future, based on our largest emissions sources. By accurately measuring, offsetting and committing to annually reduce emissions our business will not only be carbon neutral but align with both science-based targets and UK Government requirements for carbon emission reduction plans.

At Almeda, environmental responsibility isn’t just about meeting legal standards; it’s an integral part of our ethos. As leaders in facilities management, we understand the importance of sustainability as a key pillar in our business strategy, guiding us towards a greener, more sustainable future.
